Welcome to the Campaign for a Better New Mexico web site.
Well, Election Day has come and passed. Some candidates won. Others lost. At the Campaign for a Better New Mexico we believe democracy doesn't end on Election Day, and that we have a right to participate in the decisions that affect our lives.
Right now our state representatives and senators are meeting in Santa Fe for a 2 month session. We have the opportunity to pass laws that could expand opportunity and promote fairness for all New Mexicans-but we need you to call your state senator (505 986 4862) and ask them to support the Campaign for a Better New Mexico.
We know from talking to folks neighbors we need:
Quality Healthcare Assured for all New Mexicans
When it comes to healthcare we have a choice—continue to waste more taxpayer dollars in our failing private system or move in a new direction with the Health Security Act. Each of us has the right to the best healthcare for our families. The Health Security Act will guarantee comprehensive health care—similar to what state employees receive-- and the freedom to choose your own doctor. Finally, a healthcare system that works for us, not the insurance companies.
Raise the Minimum Wage to $7.50
The Federal Minimum Wage has not been raised in nearly 10 years, while prices of things like gas and groceries keep rising. Our State Legislature should pass a new minimum wage of $7.50 an hour, and make sure it gets adjusted for the cost of living each year. We should be leading the way on the issue of living wages.
Clean Elections and Honest Government
Today, more than ever, politics in our state are driven by huge financial contributions from big corporations, land developers and powerful lobbyists. We can take the money out of politics with Clean Elections laws so that our state legislators in Santa Fe can vote on increasing opportunity for New Mexicans with healthcare reform and a new minimum wage without the influence of big money contributors.
